Well! Most of the educated us, are well aware of the fact that our skin sheds dead
cells every instant. A number of us even shed hair! But brain? How many of us
are aware of the fact that our brain, since this morning, would have lost at
least 47500 cells? How many of us know that an average adult (age 30) loses
approximately 190,000 (includes 9000 Neurons) brain cells per day? It is
natural for human beings to lose brain cells at the exact rate mentioned above.
We however, unintentionally do things in our daily life that amplifies these
figures. How many of us are freaking out having heard this? Today, this article
will clear up your brains for good. ‘Gosh! That sounds evil.”
Nature’s art of reducing brain cells:
There
are a number of diseases that are responsible for this massacre of brain cells.
Parkinson’s disease:
Neurons that are responsible for the production of
the neurotransmitter Dopamine located at the Basal Ganglia die. The basal
ganglia are the portion of the brain that controls body movements. Though this doesn't paralyze you, it is likely to give you terrible difficulty in
initiating movements of arms and legs.
And several other diseases:
Time’s precious
right? Let’s get to the bottom of it, shall we? Diseases like Huntington’s
disease, the widely known Alzheimer’s disease and injuries like spinal cord
damage or taking a hard blow to the head are other natural reasons. Now, if the
diseases haven’t done enough damage wait until you see what we do in our daily
lives to sum things up!
How are we killing brain cells?
Stress:
![]() |
Most of you would've guessed this
one all by yourself! We've been reading a lot here and there about what effects
stress has on your health, this includes killing brain cells as well.
Just for the record,
what does stress give you? Stress
that is not taken seriously is healthy; it actually motivates you to find a
solution to your problem or to achieve your goal. But, when stress is taken a
bit too serious and things get outta control, that’s when you've hit the
self-destruct button for your brain. Adrenaline rush in your body triggers
excess secretion of the chemical ‘cortisol’; too much of which depletes brain
cells. You’re not stressed reading this, are you? You better not be!
Dehydration:
Next to the Sun,
Water is the most vital source of
life on earth. When you fail to take enough water for your body to be
vitalized; your entire body gets dehydrated, this includes your brain as well!
What happens when your brain gets dehydrated? Your brain doesn’t get dehydrated
instantly without initial signs. If you fail to take water when your thirst
kicks in, you’ll find your mouth dry or sticky due to reduced levels of saliva
secretion. Soon, the amount of urine you excrete will be very less, probably
with a slight pain of the urethral glands. This will be followed by eyes sunk
in their socket, dry tear ducts, and lethargy and only now dehydration hits the
brain for real, coma will eventually be the result.
We all know that brain controls and
communicates with the rest of the body through tiny electric pulses. How does
the brain manage to generate energy? The Brain cells comprise of 85 percent of
water. The energy requirement is met by metabolizing glucose and also by the
energy produced from (Cell Osmosis) the movement of water molecules throughout
the cells of the body. When dehydration affects the brain: you are likely to
have problems with your memory. Now you know why you get the hangover after
getting high with alcohol!
When alcohol severely dehydrates your body, to
survive the body “drought,” the brain triggers secretion of stress hormones,
among them the addictive endorphins. With regular consumption of alcohol,
dehydration increases even further and endorphin production becomes an
addictive habit. This is why alcohol can be addictive.
Mercury Toxicity:
Chances
are good that you probably know that avoiding exposure to mercury is
recommended. Mercury toxicity is known as the brain cell killer. It can kill as
high as 300,000 brain cells out of which 9000 are probably neurons of the
brain. To be precise, this actually doubles the average brain cell death.
Sniffing Ketamine, Nitrous Oxide aka laughing gas and other inhalant drugs do
the same amount of damage to the brain. Smoking Cigarettes is not only
detrimental to your physical health but also to your brain. ‘I am not into
drugs, you say’, never inhale volatile inhalants like glue, gasoline,
paint-thinner and permanent marker inks.
Mercury Toxicity:
Taking Steroids:
Effects of steroid on the human body are widely known.
Steroids elevate testosterone levels and this in turn increases stress levels:
both are known to deplete brain cells. Steroids aren't the best way to push
your body to the limit and gain muscle. Take the time to lift the necessary weights
and never expect to get “ripped” overnight; steroids aren't stronger than a
man’s will!

Lack of quality sleep:
It is a
well-known fact that our brain won’t function at its best without sufficient
sleep. However, lack of proper sleep does put a lot of stress to your brain and
thus depleting its cells. Most people can effectively run on just 6 hours of
sleep, while some including me need 8 or 9 (utmost) to keep a clear head. We’ll
you’re one to the judge the amount of sleep your body needs. Note that anything
below 6 hours will hurt your brains.
8 Unbelievably freaky ways
how we kill brain cells with ease:
Here, I've enlisted top 8 things we never knew would eat our brains up!
8
- Eating junk food:
Junk foods are irresistible once you
start taking them on a consistent basis. The ill effects of junk food are well
known (bad fat); in addition to this is its feeble nutritious value. Junk foods
have very less or no nutrition at all and without the healthy nutrient supplies
the brain cells die a starving death!
7
- Indoor air pollution:
Depending on the type of indoor air pollution, the effects
may range from being harmless, to potentially life threatening. You might
consider fixing carbon monoxide detectors after hearing this. Couple and their
two young adopted daughters die from 'suspicious' carbon monoxide poisoning
after car engine was left running in garage of their home. Read more:

6
- Avoiding exercise:
Avoiding exercise harms your brain,
“Common, don’t be ridiculous!” Well, to be honest it doesn't really kill brain
cells. But, taking daily exercises is likely to bring down your stress level.
This in turn will make sure you don’t kill your brain cells. So, make time in
your schedule to exercise and reap the benefits; never avoid exercise.
5
- Standing close to a microwave oven:
It is considered, while cooking the radiation
from a microwave oven can range up to 2 feet from the oven even when it’s fully
sealed. However, the damage this does to your brain cells is nothing when
compared to a microwave that isn't properly sealed or is leaking. By standing
close to leaking microwave oven you’re likely to crush up-to several hundred
thousands of your brain cells. Leaky or not it is safe to stay at least 2 feet
away from the microwave while cooking.
4
- Sneezing:
Ha, I've heard it. It’s just an age old
myth, you say? Wait until you hear the truth; shaking your head rapidly
stretches and damages nerve cells, says University of Neurosurgery in an
article “Brain: The Body’s Control Center”. We all know the speed of our sneeze
(just for the record, it’s around 100 mph). Even though this speed varies from
time to time, it literally creates an intense vibration of the skull; which we
usually feel after a series of back-to-back sneezes. So, avoid sneezing J! Well, minimize
the chances of you sneezing.
3
– Chemotherapy:
For those who have undergone
chemotherapy, the process would have not only killed your cancerous cells, but
a chunk of your good old brain cells as well. Avoiding cancer doesn't entirely
rest in our hands, but by doing what can be done; it is possible to reduce the
risk of cancer from 50 percent to a mere 5 percent. This might help you
Both
2 & 1 definitely shocked me!
2 - Cosmetics:
1 - Drinking too much water:
This might sound
crazy; while dehydration kills brain cells, drinking too much water also does
the same! How ironic? It has been proven that intake of water consistently;
i.e., more than the kidney could process may lead to water intoxication which
causes light-headedness sometimes nausea, vomiting, headaches and a general
feeling of being unwell – in fact, very similar symptoms to those associated
with dehydration!
However, water
intoxication is not a thing to worry about if you are healthy and maintaining a
well-balanced diet that provides lots of different foods and contains sufficient
fluids to prevent dehydration.
There are things we can't control but prevent!
Stay healthy!
Life long!
Have a great day!
